Parliament has voted to condemn the federal government’s refugee swap deal with Malaysia, after an unusual alliance between the Greens and Coalition.
The fact that [under the proposed deal] Australia is committed to taking 4000 long-term refugees from Malaysia in exchange for the transfer to Malaysia of 800 asylum seekers who arrive by boat to Australia is also regarded as a positive by some UNHCR officials because it increases Australia’s overall intake of refugees.
Under the deal, 800 asylum seekers sent from Australia to Kuala Lumpur will spend an initial period in a processing centre undergoing health and identity checks. They will then be issued UNHCR cards that will specify that they are not illegal immigrants and they will live in the community as they wait years for UNHCR processing.
It is expected the deal will see Australia provide funding to the UNHCR and the International Organisation for Migration to cover the health and education costs of the group, as well as covering all of the Malaysian government’s costs, including final resettlement.

“I might grow old in Brisbane, but I would never grow up.’
Brisbane is so sleepy, so slatternly, so sprawlingly unlovely… It is simply the most ordinary place in the world…It was so shabby and makeshift … a place where poetry could never occur.

I so wish to be in Australia right now.
Melbourne Victory have unveiled their new kit for the next season. New supplier Adidas takes over from Reebok whom I’ve never really been a fan of. Adidas will supply Victory for the next 5 years. Clubs are starting to have their own kit supplier instead of going through the contracted company that the A-league provided for all clubs. This also meant that part of the proceeds of jersey sales went to the League and not all to the clubs. Hopefully this new move will help provide more funds for these sides. This clip shows some players giving their fans a sneak peek of the new kit.
