I gave my farewell speach to Rotary tonight and nearly cried in front of 100 people. I don’t wanna go.

Available at: Zyn.ca, Willow Park Wine and Spirits, Various Liquor Depot locations in Alberta

This example was recently unearthed during a dig at a Liquor Depot in Coventry Hills NE Calgary. It comes from fruit sourced at the Clare Valley, Australia from the tremendous 2004 vintage. We had little experience with Cordon Cut wines and from research learned that instead of picking the grapes, the producer cuts the vine and allows the grapes to raisin in the sun. This technique allows flavours and sugars to concentrate and is effective where noble rot or freezing cannot be realized.

Served at 8 degrees Celsius, out of the bottle this wine is viscous with a brownish amber hue. It is moving towards tawny with flecks of pink. The nose is still fresh with notes of orange, bruised peach, almonds and honey. It is exhibiting an elegant floral component that adds complexity and depth. On the palate, its entrance is sublime as it is sweet but remains light and airy. The flavour sensations are that of apricot laced with nutty toffee and honey. It has wonderful texture with acidity that is still pronounced. It finishes with wonderful length and persistance all the while being incredible elegant and nimble.

Conclusion: We think this example from Mount Horrocks is a special one. It amazes us to see wines like it on the shelves in stores but frankly, it is a thrill when we discover them and share the experience with you. This wine is drinking very well now and properly cellared will continue to bring enjoyment for years to come. If the 2004 cannot be located, we’d recommend rolling the dice on more recent vintages as up to 2008, all have scored 90+ points from Wine Spectator. A strong buy recommendation from us.

95 Points
