WINE TASTING: 2009 Molly Dooker “The Maitre D”.

It seems like I read a new article every day panning big, high octane new world wines but sometimes they are exactly what the doctor ordered.

This inky unctuous Cabernet from McLaren Vale is as near black as wine can get, hinting at the BIG flavors residing in its depths.

Chocolate, black and blue fruit, pain grille and asian spice notes are all covered in vanilla. As Gary Vaynerchuck would say, the oak monster is definitely here, but in a very pleasurable way.

This Aussie red has a ton of mouthfeel completely coating the palate from the first. Smooth as can be with very ripe tannins, what separates this wine from most fruit bombs is its acid, which carries all those big flavors to the back of the palate.

The best way to describe this wine is deliciously decadent, in the same way that a triple chocolate cake can be. It’s not the most complex wine in the world but sometimes a simple piece of cake can be better than the most ornate dessert.

Rating: 90+

ABV: 15%

Avg. Retail Price: $26
